Recruiting is the life blood of any college football program and the evaluation of talent at the high school and college level has evolved from the days of having a potential recruit send an 8 mm reel of film sent (at the player’s expense) to have it “maybe” watched and evaluated by college coaches.

New roster limits set by the NCAA at 105 scholarship or walk on players, but have served to reduce, if not eliminate walk ons players that a number of football programs have historically benefitted from. Numerous head coaches have lamented the new roster limit which has eliminated opportunities for players who were overlooked or under the recruiting radar.

There have been countless number of unknown players who earned a roster spot, a scholarship, and a starting position. Granted, the odds are stacked against walk-ons, who must start at the very bottom, primarily practicing on the scout team.

The new roster limits will mean an increase in the number of scholarship players and little room for non scholarship players. If anything, there will be scout teams with some very highly recruited players with this new regulation.
