This Cannot Be True!

University of Hawaii Head Coach Timmy Chang Did Not Watch A Crucial Play Against New Mexico; He Was Reading Scripture

“ I was just reading in my scripture, you know, talking to the Lord. And I could hear the crowd go, oh, get really excited. And then I heard that. I heard that air just released out. And I, and then I heard everybody, oh, he fumbled, he fumbled.”

During a key moment in the University of Hawaii’s game against Mountain West Conference opponent New Mexico this past Saturday, in which Hawaii quarterback Micah Alejado fumbled on the one yard line as he was about to cross the goal line, Hawaii Head Coach TImmy Chang, on his weekly radio program on KKEA (ESPN 1420), when questioned about the game changing play, said he did not see or watch the play because he was reading scripture and praying. Alejado’s fumble was the turning point of the game, which allowed New Mexico to rally and defeat the Rainbow Warriors, 21-10.

The University of Hawaii radio crew was taken aback, left speechless, and did not question or press Chang on what he just admitted on live radio. Hawaii (1-6, 0-4 MWC)). For the Hawaii head coach to openly admit that he reads scripture and not pay attention to the play on the field is almost unheard of. Many can say that the inattention to the game greatly contributed to Hawaii losing to New Mexico and giving up a lead they held through the first three quarters against the top team in their conferece.

There has been no follow up, questions, investigation, or statement from the University of Hawaii Athletic Director or school president. Such an admission is unbelievable and unheard of coming from the head football coach of a Division One team. To simply not take action on such neglect and dereliction of one’s job is beyond irresponsible, and reprehensible, however, those in charge at the University of Hawaii have taken no action, nor have there been any inquiries.

The Hawaii media is equally guilty and to blame for not questioning Chang, who is the highest paid employee in the State of Hawaii. It all comes down to accountability; something that is lacking.

Ultimately, it is the University of Hawaii players who suffer from this neglect and inattention.

As they say in Hawaii “Ain’t No Big Thing, Braddah!”
